How do you add the Amazon Payments Button to your store?

  • A US address and phone number.
  • A US bank account.
  • A credit card connected to a US address.
  • A business ID, EIN or Personal Security Number.

Once you have proof of all this, sign-up to Amazon Payments here, by selecting the ‘For Merchants’ option. You’ll be given your own Seller ID account and access to the Seller Central site, which is where you’ll integrate your buttons with your website and manage all your sales and payments. Input your credit card details and set up a checking account on Seller Central.

Next, integrate your Amazon Buttons. This is an easy process on most e-commerce sites and stores such as FoxyCart, LemonStand, WooCommerce, 3DCart, Volusion, Shopify, or Magento. If you use a different e-commerce store, you can create your own custom code to integrate the buttons or buy a plug-in. How much does Amazon charge you to use their payment process?  

Here’s a breakdown of the fees Amazon charges for its payment buttons:

  • Either a Domestic Processing Fee of 2.9% per transaction for products shipped and sold in the USA.
  • Or a Cross-Border Processing Fee of 3.9% per transaction if the order is going to a country other than the USA.
  • Every order, regardless of where it’s shipped, is charged a $0.30 Authorization Fee.

There’s also a Disputed Chargeback Fee of $20 which is non-refundable, as is the Authorization Fee. However, if a refund takes place you will receive your Domestic or Cross-Border Processing Fee back.

Amazon’s reserve policy

Amazon keeps a certain amount of your earnings for a short period to cover things like refunds, guarantees and customer complaints. This balance is called a ‘reserve’ and the exact amount of it will depend on how long you’ve been an Amazon merchant for and what kind of service you provide your customers with. Here are the specific reserve prices:

  • When you first start selling with Amazon Payments you go through a 14-day observation period whereby all of your transactions are kept in reserve before they’re released.amazon payments button
  • After that, you move into Tier 1. In this stage, Amazon holds either the entire transaction amount or the amount of all your unresolved payment disputes, whichever is higher, for seven days.
  • After six months, once you’ve made 100 transactions through Amazon Payments, you can apply to upgrade to Tier 2. This means just 3% of your daily processed payments (based on the last 28-days average) is kept in reserve.
  • If your Order Defect Rate, which measures how many customer complaints and chargebacks you receive, stays below 1%, you’re eligible to have the 3% reserve fee removed.

    Amazon Payment is one of the easiest way to pay, and for good reason, Amazon definitely wants our money, so they’ve made it as easy and as fast as possible. I agree that there are definite benefits to add the Amazon Payment to your website, and to my understanding, even if you already have a payment portal set up, if you add the Amazon Payment option the customer wouldn’t use the other one, so you wouldn’t be paying for both services. Please correct me if I am wrong though.

  • I agree that Amazon is one of the most well-known and trusted ways to make online store payments. It gives customers a sense of comfort and knows that they have Amazon to fall back on if there is an issue. That being said, I am not a fan of Amazon at all. I prefer using PayPal as a way to receive payment. I have used Amazon in the past, but this last year I stopped using them. Since COVID and fake Amazon seller accounts were created, they started doing zoom meetings to ensure you are who you claim to be. At least they were; I do not know if that is still being implemented. Amazon is straightforward to use when you checkout. If you have Shopify, I will hesitate to link your store to your Amazon store. I have friends who sell on Amazon plus have multiple websites, and they say it will not help drive your website sales up if they are connected.

  • Adding Amazon pay buttons on your website is a good idea if you want more traffic to your website. But, by my company being in direct sales I wouldn’t add Amazon to my website there are rules and regulations we have to follow. If it wasn’t for that I would add Amazon to my website.

  • A great and well researched article, Amazon’s reputation and trusted brand, as well the perks if your shopper is an Amazon Prime member, sales will increase. Amazon pay button for any online store, just makes sense. Aside from the benefits for the business owner, the one benefit I see that will drive sales up is the shopper being able to use their Amazon credit card and by enabling this button for an online store, will increase sales. People nowadays are incredibly inpatient. Being able to simply click a button and have all their information already at their fingertips is going to make consumers more apt to buy from any store, pulling out their credit card and inputting all their details onto a site that they hope is secure is daunting. Having the backing of Amazon will give peace of mind for both parties. Driving up sales and security is a great way to use this tool. I didn’t even know that this was an option. You mentioned the Amazon button itself is free, which is wonderful, considering when or if you ever want to open an online store through Amazon alone, there is a thirty five dollar up front monthly fee to have a store strictly through amazon. Therefore paying through the Amazon platform will be both beneficial for the shop owner and consumer. Great and informative article!

  • I knew about the other types of payment mediums such as Paypal, but Amazon honestly never crossed my mind. This idea is genius because who doesn’t shop and trust Amazon? They are such a well-known household name and many people trust them with their information.
